    We are pleased to announce the return of our Alexandria Tennis Academy- SSSAS Tennis Camp for Boys and Girls.  Sessions begin as early as June 11 and continue through August 17, 2018 and you can sign up for an AM or a Full-Day session.
    This camp is directed by our Boys Varsity Tennis Coach Mr. Kinde Taye. Players at all levels of experience are welcome as Coach Taye will personalize your tennis training experience while focusing on improving your fundamental knowledge and skill set of the game.  Coach Taye is the 2016 Washington Post All-Metropolitian Region Coach of the Year and he is a USPTA certified tennis professional with over 25 years experience coaching regionally and nationally ranked players from around the country.  Coach Taye is also the owner and director of the Alexandria Tennis Academy.   • Algebra I

    This course is for students who have completed Algebra I and would like a refresher course before Algebra II, Geometry, or Algebra II/Trig. The class reviews all Algebra I topics. The concentrated nature of the course requires daily homework and perfect attendance. Topics covered include number systems, solving equations and inequalities, graphing, operations with polynomials, rational and irrational expressions and equations, factoring, linear, and quadratic functions. No credit.

    ASM Tennis Camp Sessions offering weekly full day and half day tennis camps. (Limited to 30 junior players per week) register fast limited availability.
    ASM’s Tennis Specialized camp programs for Children ages 5-15 enables players to learn and be grouped according to level and ability.  ASM Tennis Academy specialized programs are offered in USA, France, Switzerland, Russia .  We customize campers into fallowing training groups so players learn and develop together in a fun environment.  Campers will be grouped by age and skill level in Red Ball(5-8 years of age), Orange Ball(8-10 years of age), Green Ball  (10-12 years of age) or Development (ages 8-15). Development is for USTA team players or USTA individual players level intermediate through advanced.  Individual Master Classes (all ages) are for players to work one and one to develop proper technique, consistency, and strategy for players.

    The ASM tennis camp programs begin June 4 and runs weekly through August 24 and is located on the shaded updated tennis courts at the SSSAS Lower school campus. Program activities include weekly tennis, indoor activities, prizes, competitions, games and an end of the week pizza party.  Campers will be grouped according to age or ability level.  Quick-start courts and soft balls will be used for players ages 5-10 (36” red ball, 60” orange ball, and 78” green ball).  The cost of participation is listed below and payment needs to be submitted to ASM through our website www.asmtennisacademy.com.

Essays prepared in this class can be used in the fall to satisfy the requirement for a personal essay required by many college applications. No academic credit is provided.

  • Contemporary Issues in Health and Sexuality

    This one week summer class satisfies the Health & Sexuality Education requirement for rising 12th graders. Contemporary Issues in Health and Sexuality covers topics ranging from global health to parenting skills. Yoga, meditation, and mindfulness will be practiced daily. We will take two field trips, to Whole Foods for our nutrition lesson and to the Museum of Health and Medicine. Expect a healthy end to summer vacation and transition back into Senior year!

    Experience...Investigate...Discover! If you love the outdoors and like to question, explore, and enjoy nature (and don’t mind getting a little wet!), come join Saints Lower School Teacher Beth Barrow as she leads young naturalists on a series of field trips to explore the various ecosystems of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. Highlights include exploring the ecosystems and wildlife of Huntley Meadows and Hidden Pond, a walk to cascading waterfalls for a swim in Fredericksburg, hiking the Billy Goat Trail in Great Falls, hiking and swimming in Calvert Cliffs Park, and a fun-filled day of swimming, finding sharks’ teeth, and enjoying a cookout at Breezy Point Beach. Repeat campers are always welcome.

    Spend a week in an authentic design studio atmosphere!  Learn how to design your own great fashion and styles for you!   Gain knowledge of the foundations to draw, design, and sew your ideas that are as good as those in stores!  Become skilled at reading and transforming patterns that will fit you to a ‘T”!
     
    In her twentieth year, former SSSAS French teacher, Paris trained couturière, and experienced instructor, Catherine Lochtefeld Sirianni, is back with Fashion Camp I and II for anyone age 12 and up. Adults are welcome.
     
    Each week is independent and will focus on Design or Creation but it is best to sign up for both! The skills of Session I: Portfolio can flow right into Session II: Sewing and Construction to give a complete snapshot of the industry.  Great for any art portfolio as well.  Come join this fast-paced workshop!
     
    The First Week: Fashion Camp I: Fashion Design: Portfolio
     
    This is the creative process in two-dimension.   The inspiration includes runway videos and fashion magazines translated into figurine drawing and storyboarding.  Learn or perfect perspective, shape, form, color, texture, textile design, figure drawing, live model drawing, and exploration of famous designers to create a collection.  The week includes morning and afternoon sessions exploring fashion history, viewing runway videos, visits to the leading area fabric store to discover and delight in couture materials, the Textile Museum and the Museum of Women in the Arts to view fashions from other eras. The week will provide the all tools and inspiration to create an impressive portfolio and skills to continue designing for life. Should a student be considering a career in the Arts or in Design, these would be a strong beginning for a Design School portfolio.
     
    The Second Week: Fashion Camp II: Fashion Design: Sewing & Construction
     
    This week is more technical but just as fun!  Beginners and experienced sewists welcome!  We view and discuss runway videos by accomplished designers, then, inspired by fashion trends, available fabric and notions, design and make an outfit that fits you perfectly using traditional methods of couture.  Draw, design, create a pattern, transform, and sew it.  We begin with an easy project to learn basic skills and to practice!  Work at your own pace; each element is taught and guided step by step.  All materials are included.  Join us for the basics or take your skills to the next level!  Come sew with us!

    Returning for his fifth year, Saints Faculty Member and Varsity Football Head Coach Bernard Joseph will direct this non-contact skills football camp with past and present football players from SSSAS. The camp is designed to teach the art of football to all skill levels, emphasizing safe play and skill development. Coach Joseph is an alumnus of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University where he played alongside 2009 NFL Hall of Fame Inductee Bruce Smith. Mr. Joseph began his coaching career at Virginia Tech under the direction of Coach Bill Dooley and staff. He oversaw the special teams and assisted with coaching the defensive line unit. Mr. Joseph coached at Catholic University and later served as the Head Coach for Bishop McNamara High School in Prince George’s County, Maryland. Coach Joseph is known for his ability to teach and coach the game of football effectively and safely to players of all skill levels. Early registration is recommended for this camp due to its growing popularity.

  • Junior Fashion Camp

    Do you love clothes and accessories? Love beautiful textiles and colors? Love to create and design? Then this camp is for you!  SSSAS Middle School Counselor, Karen Kunz brings her passion and experience to a fun camp designed to build the interest of younger campers in the exciting world of fashion and design. Throughout the week, campers will learn new skills such as sewing and embroidery and are encouraged to express their creativity through different projects such as making your own purse or designing your own tank top. Included is a field trip to JoAnn’s Fabric Store and the National Museum of American History to see the First Lady Dress Collection.  Campers will also learn how to make their own fashion accessories to take home at the end of the week.     This unique one-week camp is an American Red Cross certification course. It is designed to introduce first-aid techniques in the prevention and care of athletic injuries and illnesses. Emphasis is placed upon skills necessary to manage and prevent common injuries, including acute and chronic overuse injuries. This camp will provide students with a laboratory experience in which skills relative to injury prevention are practiced. This course is great for parents, babysitters, or anyone interested in health issues and/or peace of mind. One semester of P.E. credit. This course fulfills one of the nine SSSAS P.E. credits required for graduation.

    This course leads students through a survey of the writings and themes of the New Testament, including a consideration of how these themes are portrayed in music and art. This summer course fulfills the semester requirement that all freshmen and sophomores must complete for SSSAS graduation. It is an intensive course that will meet from 8:30 a.m. until noon, with a mid-morning break. Students and families should be mindful of the intensity of the class hours required. Please note that students must attend all three weeks of this course to obtain academic credit. One semester credit.   • Sizzling Summer Band Camp AM

    The Sizzling Summer Band Camp is a program geared towards rising 5th—rising 9th grade students who currently play a band instrument.     Mr. Ambrose is a native of North Carolina and earned his BM in Music Education and MM in Jazz Studies at East Carolina University under the tutelage of his mentor, Carroll V Dashiell as well as artist and distinguished professor, Bob Mintzer. Mr. Ambrose has also been a featured conductor for the North Carolina Regional Honors jazz ensemble and is the Director of Jazz at SSSAS. As a highly sought after educator, he serves as guest clinician and soloist with various schools and ensembles nationally and internationally. Additionally, he is an adjudicator for Festivals of Music, an internationally recognized music festival series for middle and high school performance groups. Thanks to his unwavering dedication to the development of young artists, in 2005 Mr. Ambrose developed the District X all District Honors Jazz Band weekend, a program that has continued to thrive since inception. In recognition of his contributions to music education, he has been the recipient of numerous teaching honors: Yale University Teaching Award; Northern Virginia Educational Leadership Award; Veterans of Foreign Wars National Citizenship Education Teacher Post Recognition Award; Alexandria Education Partnership Excellence in Education Teacher Award; Alexandria City Alex Award for Outstanding Contribution to Arts Education Mr. Ambrose is a former Arts Education commissioner on the City Commission for the Arts and has served as guest conductor of the Alexandria Symphony's Children's concert series, featuring Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet, Bernstein’s “Symphonic Dances (from West Side Story).  He was the featured guest soloist with the orchestra as they presented music from the legendary recordings "Charlie Parker with Strings." Mr. Ambrose has performed in concert with the following artists: Bob Mintzer and the Yellowjackets, Vanessa Ruben, Stephanie Jordan, Nnenna Freelon, Terell Stafford, Jon Faddis, Carl Allen, Little Anthony and The Imperials, the Dells, Ashford and Simpson, The Spinners, The Temptations, Lou Rawls, Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, and was recently featured as the featured soloist, performing John Williams’ Concerto for Saxophone. In addition to his celebrated career as an educator, and in demand soloist, Vaughn leads his own Jazz quartet in the DC metro area and freelances up and down the east coast. He has performed at the Montreaux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the JVC Jazz Festival in New York City and the International Association of Jazz Educators Convention. In March 2009, as a member of the group Alvin Atkinson and the Sound Merchants, Mr. Ambrose participated in an inspiring US State Department tour, where they performed and Lectured in Afghanistan, Armenia, Iraq and Lebanon; the universality of music transcends all borders.

    The Soccer Pros is a physical development program for boys and girls specializing in soccer instruction and games. Younger campers learn fundamental skills through dribbling, shooting, and passing games, all in a warm and friendly environment. The older age groups focus on developing skills and techniques through soccer games, challenges, and team-building competitions. The Soccer Pros will have special appearances from current and former professional soccer players to sign autographs and answer questions about becoming a real Soccer Pro!

    Mini Pros: Ages 4-6 
    This program is specialized for our youngest age groups and uses a variety of fun games to delight and engage kids in physical education. This camp is professionally designed to develop motor skills, promote physical fitness, and create self-confidence in kids. We stress a non-competitive environment and promote fun above all else. AM, PM, or Full-Day sessions available.
     
    Junior Pros: Ages 7-10
    In this program campers will be taught how to optimize tactics such as ball control, dribbling, shooting, and passing. The Soccer Pros puts emphasis on proper technique on the field. The Soccer Pros instructors will provide your child with fun and creative ways to play both individually and within a team environment. The Soccer Pros staff will conduct small-sided games, tournaments and other fun-related activities. AM, PM, or Full-Day sessions available.
     
    Soccer Pros Elites: Ages 11-13
    This program is designed to create a fun, yet challenging experience through individual and group instruction. Players learn to develop the skills necessary to play soccer correctly and at a fun and desired level. The Soccer Pros staff will conduct small-sided games, tournaments and other fun-related activities. AM, PM, or Full-Day sessions available.

  • STEAM Technology & Tinkering Fun Camp

    STEAM challenges, coding lessons, tinkering, circuits and robots await your budding engineer during our week long STEAM, tinkering & technology camp. Campers will learn how to control and program robots, use LittleBits to combine creativity with circuits, design and print an original, usable project with 3D printers, and discover so much more using other games, robots and tools. Teamwork, curiosity and creativity will be put to the test as campers try to build towers, bridges and more during daily STEAM challenges. We will explore the worlds of stop animation and virtual reality (VR) and create some of our own!  Contraption Maker will allow your engineer to explore and use physics concepts as they design chain reactions and problem solve. Students will be introduced to coding languages and then apply what they have learned to problem solve and innovate.  Campers will be encouraged to combine their creativity with their STEAM skills to design, create, adjust and play!     At SummerTimes Day Camp we understand the importance of play. We are dedicated to providing a safe, nurturing environment where the campers can explore new opportunities, make new friends, and create memories to last a lifetime. For rising kindergarteners through rising sixth graders, Day Camp offers a wide range of enriching activities each day, including arts and crafts, music and drama, science and technology, sports, and daily swimming. Campers are grouped by age into “home bases” according to grade level and assigned to a caring counselor who rotates with the group through the daily activities. The counselors will not only supervise activities, but act as role models as the campers are encouraged to act in a kind and responsible manner.  We believe that each camper is important and unique, and we strive to encourage these individual strengths each day.

    • Campers must bring their lunch every day.
    • Each camper is provided a fabulous Day Camp T-shirt.
    • Campers utilize the Lower School’s excellent facilities including music rooms, art studios, computer and science labs, and the tinkering space.
    • Each week of camp has a designated theme. Special events and field trips are designed around the theme.
    • Off-campus transportation is provided by school buses operated by our own team of professional SSSAS Transportation Department drivers.

    This engaging half-day camp option for our youngest campers emphasizes fun and friendships and is staffed by responsible and experienced adults who have been trained and prepared for this summer’s fun! Each child enjoys a small, self-contained class with art activities, building, puzzles, stories, and singing. The groups have outdoor playground time, as well as water play.

    To provide the best possible experience for every child, Junior Day campers must be three years old and toilet trained before the start of camp. Please apply sunscreen each morning and bring a daily snack and suit/towel for water play. Space is limited, so sign up early!

    Creative Cooking with Tiny Chefs (Grades JK-2)
    Welcome to Tiny Chefs: A company dedicated to sharing the joy of cooking with kids. Kids of all ages love to get into the kitchen and help make treats and meals. At Tiny Chefs we tap into that love and make learning to cook fun, educational, nutritious, and did we mention fun? In each class we will introduce recipes that will enable your “Tiny Chef” to practice skills such as measuring, mixing, stirring, baking. and cooperating. As always your chefs will have plenty of good eats to sample and take home to share.

    Advanced Culinary Skills for Tiny Chefs (Grades 3-6)
    Welcome to Gourmet Chefs: A company dedicated to sharing the joy of cooking with kids. These days more and more kids are becoming interested in food and cooking. At Gourmet Chefs we aim to tap into that interest by creating an environment in which culinary exploration is balanced with important basic skills that students will use for the rest of their lives. In each completely interactive class, our Gourmet Chefs in training will prepare an entrée, healthy snack, or dessert. They will learn many of the basics of cooking, such as how to read and reference a recipe, proper measuring and knife skills and multiple cooking techniques including baking, grilling, and sautéing. As the students gain culinary knowledge they will also be expanding their vocabulary, reading comprehension, math and logic skills and their ability to work as a team. 

    Weekly Themes are described below:

    Sweet and Savory Pies - Session I June 18-22
    Who can resist warm, flaky pastry, fresh from the oven? It doesn’t matter if it is bursting with sweet, fruity, creamy deliciousness or flavorful, savory goodness, either way you just want to dive in! Tiny and Gourmet Chefs will learn techniques to create the classic pastry dough needed for such staples as Pies, Tarts and Quiche, plus the delicious fillings to go inside them. They will also work with puff pastry, pizza dough and phyllo as we explore recipes for Homemade Pop Tarts, Pizza Pie, Turnovers and Spanakopita. Pot Pies, Pie Pops and Empanadas…if there is pastry on it, under it or around it, we will probably be making it!

    Snack Attack - Session II June 25-29
    This week students will push the limits on the snack concept and prepare a variety of wholesome, delicious, and unique nibbles.  This is not your mother’s PB&J!  Chefs will prepare a variety of bite-sized munchies like chicken salad cups, homemade granola bars, veggie nachos, roasted red pepper hummus with homemade pita chips, and more.  No one will go hungry this week!

    Kids Cook-Off - Session III July 2-6 (Grades JK-2)
    Kid cooks, bakers and chefs have joined the ranks of elimination style cooking contests and here at Tiny Chefs we are getting in on the action! In this exciting session, classes will be separated into rotating teams and each team will create recipes that are judged by the instructors in a blind taste test.  Sometimes the teams will create the same item, and compete head to head, other times they will create different recipes within a theme such as Snack Attack or Sweet and Savory Pies. May the best team win!

    Chopped! - Session III July 2-6 (Grades 3-6)
    Never have food challenge reality shows been so popular and Chopped! is a favorite here at Tiny and Gourmet Chefs! We like it so much we decided to base a whole week long camp on the concept. Our version has the added twist of focusing on different cuisines every day of camp. So, each day the Tiny and Gourmet Chef campers will be presented with a basket with 3 or 4 ingredients, which reflect these different cuisines—French, Italian, Mexican, Asian and “All-American”. Using those ingredients and working within those cuisines, they will challenge themselves to make mouthwatering specialties, traditional favorites and explore new ingredients, tastes and combinations. 

    Dips and Donuts - Session IV July 9-13
    Does your kid love to dip their food? Chips in salsa, veggies in hummus, bread sticks in marinara sauce? How about dipping donuts in glazes and toppings?  In this fun, nutritious and delicious camp, the Tiny Chefs will do all of that! Savory recipes like Mexican Layered Dip or Spinach and Artichoke Dip in Wonton Wrappers will be made side-by side with Lemon Glazed Blueberry Donuts and Pumpkin Donut Holes with Cinnamon Topping. These are just a few of the types of recipes your Tiny Chef will enjoy as they dip and dunk (and bake and blend) their way through our newest camp!

    Cupcake Wars I - Session V July 16-20
    Cupcakes are all the rage and it’s a trend that’s clearly here to stay!  If you’ve ever been curious about how the pros make those cupcakes so precious and ornate, and if competition is your middle name, then this is the week for you!  We’ll spend three days on cupcake basics-measuring, mixing, baking, and frosting, and then finish the week with two days of baking battle!  Small teams will face off with one another to compete for the title of “Best Cupcake!”  May the best cupcake win!

    Breakfast for Dinner! Session VII July 30-August 3
    Turn your favorite breakfast dishes into the main event as dinner options.  How about a cheddar-chive frittata with fresh salsa?  Or Brunch pasta with bacon and eggs?  Maybe you’d prefer a more traditional French toast, dressed up with bananas and blueberries?  Any way you slice it your little chef will love tucking into these comforting breakfast classics.

    Superhero Adventures - Session VIII August 6-10
    Superheroes have to eat too and we are going to let our Tiny and Gourmet Chefs figure out and make their favorite character’s meals! Does Spiderman like Make-your-Own Spider Web Pizza best? Does Hulk like our Smashing Mac and Cheese with Broccoli because it has green in it or would he & Iron Man share some Captain America’s Apple Pie?  After they have spent several weeks creating heroic menus, they will close out the session by designing their own superhero and deciding what their favorite food will be. Come join us for some superhero culinary adventures!

    Who runs the world? GIRLS! This camp is a crash course in female empowerment for motivated young women who have aspirations for leadership. It is designed to inspire young women to explore attainable goals throughout middle and high school while making plans for college, value their achievements by looking at inspirational models in history and their communities, and instill confidence and courage to persevere in our society. 
     
    They will apply their personal passions to examples from pop culture, literature, Internet expression, and cinema to better discover their unique voices. Guest speakers and field trips will expand this experience beyond the classroom and prepare the girls to take on the world. Please note: each session is one week long.   • Zoology Camp

    Do you love animals? Do you love field trips? If so, this camp is for you. A daily field trip format is combined with lab work so students can learn more about the amazing animal world. Students will explore all the branches of the animal kingdom: invertebrates, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. We will see animals in the wild as well as in captivity, do animal crafts and animal habitat projects, and meet people who work with animals. As we learn about animals, we will also learn about their natural habitats in the air, water, and on land, and what people can do to help preserve natural environments. This camp is run by Saints Middle School Science Teacher Robert Davis and is for kids who want to mix a strong science course with lots of summertime fun and adventure.
