Rising Grades 3-6 12:30 p.m.-3:00 p.m. (Half Day) Session I: June 17-21 Session II: June 24-28 Monday-Friday Middle School Campus $240 per session
The Senior Moments/Oral Histories Camp is a half-day program that provides campers the opportunity to give back to the community while learning new journalism and audio production skills. This camp draws upon SSSAS's relationship with Goodwin House, the nearby retirement community. In the classroom setting we will introduce the concept of oral histories, discuss good questions to ask the seniors, and write a script. Campers will then spend a day at Goodwin House interacting with selected residents, interviewing them one-on-one, and recording their stories. Your camper will learn the basics of audio recording and production, and will put together a finished product that they can keep and share. On the last day of camp, we will return to Goodwin House and play selections of the audio for an audience of seniors and staff. The residents who participate will also receive links to the audio of their interviews to keep and share with loved ones. Our hope is that this camp experience will inspire your children to ask questions of their parents or grandparents about “the old days” and record their own oral histories and family stories.
The Senior Moments Camp is led by Camp Director Chad Campbell, who has worked for two decades in radio, at NPR and Sirius XM Satellite Radio. Mr. Campbell also manages Senior Moment Productions, a business that provides this same service to local senior citizens. Feel free to contact Chad at firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions you may have about the camp.
