Find and Identify Fossils!
If your camper enjoys adventure and exploration, they will enjoy wielding a rock-hammer and searching for local fossils, crystals, and other remnants of an earlier age in Fossil Exploration! In the early to middle Miocene (23 to 8 MYA), the lower Potomac River/Chesapeake Bay was the site of a shallow inland sea. Marine fossils abound, including shark teeth, sea turtle shell, whale bone, crocodile teeth, and many kinds of fish vertebrae. In addition to daily excursions to sites and museums across the metropolitan area, campers will also hear from guest speakers. Campers will get to keep any fossils they find.
Fossil Exploration is led by Mr. Ted Yoder, a current SSSAS Upper School science teacher. Please contact Mr. Yoder with any questions you may have at tyoder@sssas.org or by telephone at 703-212-2942.
